Milagu champa was one of the 170 varieties of rice saved by the late Nel Jayaraman, who worked tirelessly to conserve and promote traditional paddy varieties among farmers. This champa season grain resembles peppercorns and hence was given this name milagu (peppercorn) champa (season).
Rich in fibre, milagu champa is said to contain selenium which helps to prevent colon and intestine cancer. Another farmer group adds that if anyone they know has any dermatitis issues or a burning sensation around the eyes, they would ask them to eat a bowl of this grain
