Sirumani is a rare indigenous rice variety from Tamil Nadu, offering a glimpse into the remarkable diversity that once flourished across India's agricultural landscapes.
Its name is believed to derive from the Tamil words Siru (small) and Mani (pearl or gem), while some accounts trace its origins to the historic Sirugamani region near Tiruchirappalli in present-day Tamil Nadu.
It is referenced in historical records of traditional rice diversity, including those attributed to Dr. R. H. Richaria’s Rices of India, as a distinct variety grown in Tamil Nadu.
A long-duration Champa season crop, Sirumani matures over nearly six months. With its near-white grains and excellent fermentation qualities, it is particularly valued for soft idlis and flavourful dosas, in addition to everyday meals.
More than a grain, it is a living agricultural legacy, now proudly conserved at our farms in Manjakkudi
