Preserving Biodiversity Through Traditional Farming
In 1970, a fungal disease called Southern Corn Leaf Blight wiped out approximately 15% of the entire United States corn crop in a single season. The reason it spread so efficiently was not bad luck, it was uniformity. Almost all of the corn being grown at the time came from the same genetic stock, which meant that when one plant was vulnerable, every plant was vulnerable. A single pathogen moved through millions of acres of crops with nothing to stop it.
Agricultural scientists have termed this phenomenon “genetic vulnerability”. Today, it looms over us as risk that has come full circle, in every food system that has traded diversity for efficiency.
India’s rice story is a version of this. A country that once cultivated over 1,10,000 varieties of rice now relies on a fraction of that genetic diversity for the bulk of its production. The varieties that replaced them were not chosen because they were more nutritious, better suited to local conditions, or more resilient to disease. They were chosen because they produced more grain per acre and that trade-off fed a generation. It also narrowed the genetic foundation of one of the world's most important food crops in ways that we are still calculating.
What Biodiversity Actually Means in a Rice Field
Biodiversity in agriculture is not about having more types of things for their own sake it is a functional system. Different rice varieties carry different genetic traits. For example, some are drought-resistant, some tolerate flooding, certain varieties repel specific pests without chemical intervention and some others have deep root systems that prevent soil erosion.
When a farming community grows multiple varieties across a season, those varieties interact with the land, the water, and each other in ways that build resilience into the system. A drought that destroys one variety may not affect another. Whereas, a pest that targets one grain's specific chemistry may find another variety uninteresting and that diversity itself is a form of insurance.

Traditional Indian farming communities understood this empirically. They grew multiple varieties not because they were hedging their bets consciously but because it worked. Farmers in Kerala would grow Navara alongside Jeerakasala and farmers in Bengal would rotate Gobinda Bhog with other local varieties. The diversity was built into the practice of farming, not an addition to it.
The shift to monoculture, the growing of a single high-yield variety across large areas of land, removed that buffer. It made farming legible and scalable for commercial systems while also making it fragile.
Preservation through the Act of Seed Saving
At the centre of traditional farming biodiversity is an act that sounds almost too simple - saving seeds.
Before commercial agriculture, every farming family saved a portion of each harvest as seed for the following season. These were not just any seeds, they were the seeds from the healthiest plants, the best-performing individuals in that season's crop. Over generations, this process of selection adapted each variety to its environment. The result was what agricultural scientists now call landraces: locally adapted varieties with genetic characteristics shaped by centuries of interaction with a particular environment.
The Navara farmer in Thrissur who plants the same seed her family has saved for four generations is not being sentimental. She is maintaining a living genetic archive that no seed bank can fully replicate. A seed in cold storage is preserved, planted, harvested, saved, and planted again. That plant is evolving, adapting, and staying current with the changing conditions of the land it grows in. That distinction matters enormously for long-term agricultural resilience.

The Role of Traditional Farming Communities
India's biodiversity in food crops exists because of farming communities who maintained it, often under significant economic pressure to abandon traditional varieties in favour of commercially promoted alternatives. The farmers who continued to grow Kaattuyaanam, Mapillai Champa, and Bahurupi did so because those varieties were part of their agricultural and cultural identity, not because the market rewarded them for it. For most of the last 50 years, the market did the opposite.
The economic reality of traditional farming is difficult. Heritage varieties typically yield less per acre than commercial hybrids. They also take longer to grow, require more knowledge and attention. The seeds cannot be purchased fresh each season from a corporate supplier because saving them is the point. In a market where price is the primary driver and volume is the measure of success, traditional farming operates at a structural disadvantage.
This is why consumer choice connects directly to conservation. When a person buys a bag of Gobinda Bhog or Kullakar, they are creating demand that makes it economically viable for a
farmer to keep growing that variety. Demand sustains cultivation, cultivation sustains seed, seed sustains the variety and the chain is that direct.

The Simplest Thing You Can Do
You do not need to be a farmer or a policy maker or an agricultural scientist to contribute to this. Eating heritage varieties keeps them in cultivation. Buying from producers who source directly from traditional farmers puts money into the system that sustains them. Asking where your food comes from and expecting a real answer creates the kind of accountability that moves markets.
The biodiversity that India's traditional farmers maintained for centuries is still largely there. It is narrower than it was and the window for reversing that narrowing is not indefinitely open. But the tools for contributing to its preservation are, for most people, as simple as what they put in their rice cooker.
