Why Heritage Rice Deserves a Place in Your Diet
Modern restaurants across Mumbai, Bengaluru, and Chennai are quietly pulling white rice off their menus and replacing it with something that looks almost black in the pot and turns a deep, dramatic purple on the plate - Karuppu Kavuni. A rice variety that has existed in Tamil Nadu for over a thousand years, once reserved exclusively for royalty, now finding its way onto tasting menus and into the kitchens of people who are paying attention.
Is this a trend? It looks like one. But the more accurate answer is that it is a correction.
Heritage rice varieties like Karuppu Kavuni and Navara are not new discoveries. They were not developed in a lab or engineered for a specific nutritional outcome. They were grown, selected, and refined by Indian farmers across centuries of observation. Farmers who noticed which grain kept their families healthier, which variety performed through a drought and which rice their children thrived on. That process of selection, repeated across generations, produced grains that are now being validated by nutritional science with considerable enthusiasm.
So while 2026 may look like the year heritage rice arrived, the rice itself has been here the whole time.
What Makes Heritage Rice Different
The rice most of us grew up eating, the polished white kind that comes in a 5 kg bag from the supermarket, starts its life as something considerably more nutritious. Brown rice, in its natural state, retains its bran layer and germ, both of which contain fibre, B vitamins, and essential minerals. The milling process that turns it white removes all of that. What remains is primarily starch.
Some of that nutrition is then added back through fortification and sold as a feature on the packaging.
Heritage rice varieties, when grown and processed traditionally, skip that entire cycle. The grain reaches you closer to what it was when it came off the plant with the bran and the germ intact. The nutritional profile that took centuries to develop through natural selection is still there.
A 2018 study published in the journal Food Chemistry documented that pigmented rice varieties, including black and red rice, contain significantly higher levels of anthocyanins, the antioxidant compounds responsible for their colour, compared to white rice. In some cases, the anthocyanin content of black rice was found to be comparable to or higher than that of blueberries, which currently retail in India for anywhere between 600 and 1000 rupees for 200 grams. Karuppu Kavuni, at a fraction of that cost per kilogram, has been growing in Tamil Nadu for centuries.

The Glycemic Index Conversation
One of the most common concerns around rice in modern nutrition is its glycemic index. White rice has a high GI score, meaning it raises blood sugar quickly after consumption. For a country where diabetes prevalence has reached alarming levels, with India now home to over 101 million people living with the condition according to a 2023 ICMR study, this is not a small concern.
Heritage rice varieties tell a different story. Kala Namak, the fragrant grain grown in the Terai region and referenced in texts dating back to the time of the Buddha, has one of the lowest glycemic index scores of any rice variety. Navara, the Ayurvedic rice from Kerala documented in the Ashtangahridayam as a therapeutic grain, has been studied for its anti-inflammatory and anti-diabetic properties. A clinical study published in the Journal of Ethnopharmacology found that Navara rice showed measurable hypoglycaemic effects in research models. These are not folk claims dressed up as nutrition. They are findings that the academic community is increasingly taking seriously.
The M.S. Swaminathan Research Foundation, one of India's most respected agricultural research institutions, has documented through field studies that indigenous rice varieties contain significantly higher levels of zinc, iron, and protein compared to widely consumed commercial varieties. For a country managing both malnutrition and lifestyle disease simultaneously, that gap matters.
Why we should consider eating “Local”
There is a concept in food called terroir, borrowed from the wine world, that describes how the specific geography, climate, and soil of a place shapes the character of what grows there. The idea is that place is inseparable from produce.
Indian heritage rice varieties are a precise expression of this. Gobinda Bhog is a Bengali grain. It was selected over centuries by farmers in Bengal, in Bengali soil, through Bengali seasons. Ambe Mohar belongs to Maharashtra in the same way. Jeerakasala belongs to Kerala. These varieties were not shuffled around for convenience. They evolved in specific regions because those regions produced specific conditions that shaped the grain.
When you eat Gobinda Bhog grown in its native region by a farmer using saved seed, you are eating something that has a direct, unbroken relationship with the land it came from. That is not a romantic idea. It is an ecological one. Locally adapted grains tend to require fewer external inputs, perform better in their native climates, and contribute to the health of the soil they grow in.

Why It Matters That You Choose Heritage over Mass Produced
India was once home to over 110,000 varieties of rice. Estimates suggest we are now down to a few thousand in active cultivation and far fewer in common use. The rest have been displaced by high-yield commercial varieties that were introduced during the Green Revolution with the genuine and necessary goal of addressing food scarcity.
That goal was achieved. But the trade-off was biodiversity. And biodiversity in food systems is not an abstract environmental concern. It is a practical buffer against crop failure, climate change, and nutritional homogeneity. When we grow and eat only a handful of varieties, we become dependent on those varieties in ways that carry real risk.
Choosing heritage rice is not a romantic gesture toward the past. It is a decision that supports the farmers who maintain these varieties, keeps the seeds in active cultivation rather than in cold storage, and contributes to a food system that has more depth, more resilience, and more nutritional range than what most of us currently eat.
Where to start the healthier path
You do not need to overhaul your kitchen. Start with one variety. Karuppu Kavuni cooks like regular rice and works well with coconut-based curries. Gobinda Bhog makes a fragrant khichdi that needs very little else done to it. Navara can replace your usual rice for a week and the difference in how you feel after meals is worth paying attention to.
The royals who reserved Karuppu Kavuni for themselves were not wrong about what they had. They just did not share it and it's time that part changed.
